If during this time that we have been forced to stay at home has taught us anything, it is that we need to slow down and start making better choices in how we treat each other and the planet. The recent worldwide shutdown from the COVID-19 pandemic has brought an overwhelming awareness of both the negative and positive effects of tourism on a global scale. We have seen nature restore itself, human connections have deepened in innovative ways, and we have seen the importance of tourism on local economies.

So, what do we need to do? Overall, as travelers, we need to make more conscious choices on the destinations we visit, how we get there, and what we do once we arrive. We can begin by looking at traveling holistically by approaching it in a gentler, slower way. We have an opportunity for travel to heal us, but also for us to leave a positive impact on the places we visit.

It may take more time and research to make sustainable choices, but in the long run your vacation will be more impactful to you and your destinations.

Here are our top 5 ideas to guide you in making more sustainable travel choices:

1. Visit a lesser known, under the radar destination:

There are incredible destinations all over the world to explore. Let’s not continue to all travel to the same places. Check out remote, natural, healthy alternatives in Sweden, support smaller communities in the Baltic region where sustainable tourism is at the forefront, seek out incredible destinations in Asia, visit small communities in South America. The world is big and wide and filled with incredible places to visit. Find creative alternatives to the popular destinations you may want to visit.

2. Choose to work with a travel advisor, tour operator, or hotel, that contributes positively to the social and environmental aspects of their community:

Hiring a Travel Advisor is a great way to help eliminate the research you need to do and help connect you with ethical providers. Advisors work endlessly to build relationships with companies and can help provide you with creative alternatives to traditional vacation ideas. We love the idea of working with companies that are proactive in their sustainability approach. Before you book a tour, find out what they do to give back to the community or how they approach their societal and environmental impact. Learn about a hotel’s sustainability practices and then decide if you want to support that before booking your reservation.

3. Purchase carbon offset credits

One of the best sustainable choices you can make during your trip is to purchase carbon offset credits. These funds are invested in third party carbon reduction projects that combat climate change. Depending on what company you choose will depend on the projects. We personally like Sustainable Travel International. You can calculate your carbon footprint for your trip and then purchase credits that offset that footprint.

4. Travel during off seasons

Traveling during an off season is a great way to continue supporting tourism dependent economies year-round. Spreading out tourism dollars is a great way to keep economies stable and consistent. Additionally, you will get a more intimate “local” experience because there are not as many tourists. Lastly, you may find better deals from suppliers to encourage off season travel.

5. Travel for your mind, body, and soul

You may learn that the greatest memories or moments will come by experiencing something on a deeper level, not just to say you saw the most popular site. Travel with intention, to build awareness, connection, and go slowly.
